Kardex Remstar installs ten Shuttle XP units at nuclear power plant

Talen Energy’s Susquehanna nuclear power plant in Berwick, Pennsylvania, is one of the biggest of its kind in the USA. Its two water reactors generate a total output in excess of 2,600 megawatts, making it twice as big as similar plants in Germany.

As part of measures to reorganize the warehouse, Kardex Remstar installed storage lifts at the plant. The scope of delivery included eight Shuttle XP units for components and spare parts, one for storing gaskets, and another model with air conditioning for storing temperature-sensitive printed circuit boards.

Around 58,000 SKUs were previously stored on an area measuring just under 6,000 square meters. The stock is needed to guarantee permanent availability of spare parts during routine or unscheduled maintenance work.

Storage capacity was reaching its limit due to the increasing number of articles that need to be kept in stock every year. Accordingly, the management decided to install eight Shuttle XP storage lift systems from Kardex Remstar. This measure led to more than 400 square meters of space being freed up in an area measuring 500 square meters. As such, the installation reduced the amount of space needed in the area concerned by over 80 percent. At the same time, since items are now retrieved in line with the goods-to-person principle, employees were immediately able to work more ergonomically.

Besides reducing the amount of space needed for storage, another focus was on the safety of the stored goods. That is why a further Shuttle XP unit was installed for storing gaskets that are susceptible to dirt. Spare parts were previously stored on conventional static shelving. This meant that the parts were unprotected and exposed to dust and dirt as well as fluctuating humidity, compromising the quality and shelf life of the gaskets – a consequence that simply couldn’t be tolerated in a nuclear power plant, where safety is of the utmost importance.

The new Shuttle was fitted with particularly large trays in order to be able to accommodate the big and heavy gaskets. Its enclosed concept means that spare parts can be safely protected from dirt and fluctuating humidity during storage.

Printed circuit boards make even greater demands on storage conditions. The sensitive components are particularly susceptible to dirt and fluctuating temperatures, which is why they are stored in a tenth Shuttle XP unit that also has air conditioning. This allows them to be stored at a certain temperature in a controlled environment, safeguarding the service life and functionality of the electronic parts in the long term.
