With the help of VR smart glasses, prospective customers embarked on a controllable 360° flight through the product world of Kardex Remstar or directly experienced an animated order picking process. The image displayed via the glasses was simultaneously shown on a large screen so that people standing around could also take part in the experience. As such, with the help of semi-realistic images, a simulation was produced on the stand that gave the viewer the impression of being right at the heart of the action. Alexandra Jung, media and content manager at Kardex Remstar, was satisfied with the results of the new form of presentation: "With these glasses, we are giving stand visitors the opportunity to experience our systems in a completely new way."
In addition to VR glasses, augmented reality played an important role on the stand. The focus of the AR presentation was on the LR 35 Vertical Buffer Module, which optimizes the picking of small parts in warehouses with high throughput levels. With the help of an app installed on one of eleven available iPad tablets, prospective customers were able to create a three-dimensional model of the system. Users were able to rotate the view of the unit and zoom in on it in any way they chose. By tapping on the screen the system’s panels disappeared, giving the viewer a detailed insight into the internal storage processes.
This graphic form of virtual reality opens up completely new ways for the manufacturer to present its products. “Space at trade fairs is limited. Then there is the complex work involved in setting up our large-scale systems. With the help of augmented reality we can present the advantages of our systems in various ways and in a very small space,” says Alexandra Jung.
Users can access the augmented reality presentation wherever they happen to be. They just need the app and a printout of the scan pattern. Once this is scanned by smartphone or tablet, the three-dimensional model of the LR 35 appears. The plan is to present further systems in this way in future.
The advantages of presenting products using VR glasses and AR technology are obvious: The large storage units can be showcased in detail without the need for much space. In addition, features such as 360-degree views or virtual operation of the systems can be integrated into the presentation, giving the user a detailed insight into the system’s processes.
The integration of VR and AR at FachPack was just the start for Kardex Remstar. One can only wonder at what the intralogistics supplier will come up with at future trade fairs.
