Kardex Mlog carries out refurbishment and extension at Moers Frischeprodukte

Acting as general contractor, Kardex Mlog has just completed a new high-bay warehouse for Moers Frischeprodukte GmbH & Co. KG – a joint venture between food manufacturer Dr. Oetker and dairy producer Molkerei Gropper. The new plant is located in Moers. It is 44 meters tall, offers more than 17,000 pallet storage spaces, and also contains a picking and shipping center. The project also included refurbishments and adaptations to the existing plant to integrate the new conveying technology into the material flow. The new plant went into productive service in February 2025.

The plant in Moers was familiar territory for Kardex Mlog. Back in 2008, the intralogistics specialist had constructed an automated high-bay warehouse at the site. As demand for fresh food continued to grow, it was time to extend the site’s capacity once more. For this purpose, Kardex Mlog was commissioned as general contractor for logistics in January 2023. The project goals included standardizing the automation technology across the existing and extension plants to minimize subsequent maintenance requirements.
44-meter-tall stacker cranes manufactured in-house
The scope of the new construction included a pallet conveying system with 353 drives and six stacker cranes. The 44-meter-tall machines, which enable storage and retrieval, were manufactured in-house by Kardex Mlog at its Neuenstadt location. Plant visualization is carried out by the Kardex MVisu module in the Kardex Control Center warehouse management system. Gravity roller tracks, eight fire protection doors with clearance control, and six high-speed doors complete the scope of the Kardex Mlog delivery.
In addition to supply, Kardex Mlog also carried out the assembly and commissioning of the fully automated high-bay warehouse, including the approach zones and platforms, along with all necessary refitting measures. This included conveying technology adaptations and integration into the existing plant during ongoing operations. For this purpose, Kardex Mlog created a conversion concept with a corresponding schedule for each stage of the construction project. “Through our joint planning of the subprojects with all involved parties, we were able to reduce the coordination effort and save resources,” explains Sven Pitz, Head of the Refurbishment business sector at Kardex Mlog. As part of the project, the “teams and the know-how were bundled and their application targeted.”
A perfectly harmonized plant
Kardex Mlog was also responsible for connecting the electric monorail with its 36 vehicles. This system was supplied by a third-party provider, as was the steel racking construction for 17,076 pallets, the roof and wall paneling, and the warehouse management system with its material flow system. “We were very impressed by the smooth and efficient coordination of all the works, the seamless integration of the individual subsections into a perfectly harmonized overall plant, and the competent project management by Kardex Mlog,” says Project Leader Michael Dube of Moers Frischprodukte.
Moers Frischeprodukte GmbH & Co. KG was established in 2018 as a joint venture between Bielefeld-based food manufacturer Dr. Oetker and Bavarian dairy producer Molkerei Gropper. The purpose of the joint venture is to bundle their joint production in Moers. The joint Gropper and Oetker location will focus on further developing the dessert product category and exploring new possibilities in the areas of quark, yogurt, dairy, and non-dairy beverages. Production will cover items from both partner companies and be marketed separately, both nationally and internationally, via the respective sales companies. Each partner owns 50 percent of the joint venture. The new company is based on an existing plant belonging to the Dr. Oetker Group, which has been producing fresh food since 1993.
