Kardex and VetLogOne set new standards: Germany’s first logistics centre for veterinary medicine receives an AutoStore system.

3 May 2024, Company News

Kardex has equipped the logistics centre for VetLogOne, a subsidiary of Wirtschaftsgenossenschaft deutscher Tierärzte eG (WDT), with an AutoStore solution. The official opening of the AutoStore system, equipped with 30 “R5” robots, will take place on 15 May 2024. This commissioning event marks a key step in the optimisation of logistics processes, aimed at handling VetLogOne’s rapid growth and more stringent efficiency requirements.

Wunstorf, Germany - VetLogOne faced the challenge of expanding capacity at its logistics centre in Wunstorf while making more efficient use of the existing space. VetLogOne is the first specialised logistics centre for veterinary medicine in Germany and opened its doors in Wunstorf in early 2021. The logistics centre currently uses almost 20,000 sqm of space, with an option to expand to up to 40,000 sqm.

The choice was made for an AutoStore system

In light of its strong and steady growth, the company decided to work with Logistikberatung IbH Schepper GmbH & Co KG. to implement the AutoStore system in its existing logistics centre. Since this centre was dedicated to handling and storing pharmaceutical products in the veterinary medicine industry, it was especially important that the storage solution could meet Good Distribution Practice (GDP) standards. The AutoStore solution was selected to enhance the level of automation in the logistics centre while meeting the company’s growth goals.

Technical innovation and efficiency

The AutoStore system at VetLogOne consists of a grid (68,800 bin capacity) with 32,000 bins and is served by 30 Red Line “R5” robots. The system comprises four carousel ports, two conveyor ports and a pick robot, which together ensure the efficient and rapid handling of logistics processes.

Thanks to the implementation of the AutoStore system, space requirements at the Wunstorf logistics centre have been optimised, laying the foundations for future growth and a flexible approach to expansions. With the new AutoStore solution, higher order volumes can now be handled easily in the future.

A proven partnership with Kardex

Based on its long-standing partnership and experience with the Shuttle system from Kardex at the previous site in Garbsen, VetLogOne knew that it could rely on a solution from Kardex. A deciding factor was Kardex’s power to innovate, which was clearly demonstrated at the LogiMat 2023 fair. With its high level of forward-looking technology, the presentation of the AutoStore solution left a lasting impression on VetLogOne.
