Warehouse automation: Kardex Mlog building for reuter.de

2 August 2023, Company News

The Mönchengladbach-based, family-owned company, reuter.de, one of Germany’s largest specialist and online retailers for bathrooms and lighting, commissioned Kardex Mlog with the construction of its new high-bay warehouse at its Mönchengladbach-Rheindahlen location. The new facility has 17,000 pallet storage spaces and is equipped with conveying technology to connect the goods receipt and goods issue areas on two levels. After a thorough selection procedure, awarding the contract to Kardex Mlog confirmed its position as a leading provider of automated pallet warehouses. Work on the state-of-the-art plant will commence in November 2023 and cover two expansion phases, including an enhancement with automated guided vehicles (AGVs) from Safelog, a technology partner of Kardex Mlog. The scope of delivery includes twelve stacker cranes of type Kardex MSingle A. Each of these 12-meter-high machines enables 36 double cycles per hour. Racking and platform sprinklers, and a material flow computer with storage space management, round off the project. The warehouse is to be organized using the client’s ERP system.

In the first expansion phase of the project, Kardex Mlog will construct seven rack aisles with the associated retrieval line spurs and the conveying technology for the goods receipt area on the ground floor and on the platform. Commissioning is scheduled for July 2024. The second expansion phase with the remaining five rack aisles is scheduled to go live by December 2024. A three-shift operation is planned from 10 pm on Sunday until 10 pm on Saturday.

Goods receipt pallets are entered into the host system and given a barcode label before a notification gets sent to the Kardex Control Center (KCC). After the pallets are placed on one of the two loading stations, they are automatically transported away. The load unit then undergoes a profile inspection to check its weight, dimensions, and space for the forks. At the same time, the barcode is read.

System-compliant load units are transported automatically via the two vertical conveyors to the storage level and then distributed to the storage line spurs of the aisles via continuous conveyors. Following the completion of the storage operation, the KCC notifies the host system so that it can close the transport requests in both systems.

The pallets get transferred to the storage line spurs by forklift trucks, which will be replaced by automated guided vehicles supplied by Safelog. The same applies to the retrieval operation: In the initial operational phase, the pallets will be transferred on a removal conveyor via stacker crane and chain conveyor to the forklift trucks. In the medium term, automated guided vehicles will ensure continuous automation. “The concept in place for the operation of the reuter.de high-bay warehouse represents the future of intralogistics. Extremely high performance combines with great flexibility to supply the workstations,” explains Dirk Möller, Director of New Business Projects.
