29 April 2024, Company News

Third-party logistics provider Bleckmann strives to provide suitable and cutting-edge logistics solutions to help their customers further grow their businesses. With the investment in a highly efficient AutoStore solution empowered by Kardex, Bleckmann is going a step further to deliver a seamless customer experience.

Zurich, Switzerland, 29.04.2024 – Bleckmann is a leading 3PL logistics partner serving clients, particularly in the fashion and lifestyle industries. Founded in 1862, Bleckmann evolved into a logistics expert for omni-channel commerce. The company employs more than 4,000 people across 30 locations, including the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK and the US.

In line with their growth strategy, Bleckmann was looking for an automated warehouse solution to increase storage capacity while mitigating risks due to labor scarcity at their site in Grobbendonk, Belgium. Kardex AutoStore proved to be the ideal solution to meet their customers' growing demand. Not only because of the system's unbeaten flexibility and scalability, which makes it possible for Bleckmann to start with a basic setup and extend it later. But also due to a significant increase in storage capacity due to improved warehouse space utilization. The intralogistics solution provider Kardex has been commissioned to plan and implement the AutoStore solution.

“Kardex convinced us with a very short lead time of only five months from order placement to system Go-Live. In addition, we were impressed by their innovative ideas to provide a fully integrated solution that maximizes efficiencies in our warehouse", says Stefan Schepers, automation specialist at Bleckmann.

Goods-to-person instead of person-to-goods

In addition to a tailor-made AutoStore system, the Kardex solution will include a conveyor system as well as a Warehouse Control System (WCS) and IT environment.

Goods will be stored in 25,000 bins, neatly stacked on top of and next to each other in an aluminum cubic grid system. The rails on top of the grid will serve as runways for 24 battery-powered high-speed robots, which continuously pick up, rearrange, and transport storage bins. Two ergonomic AutoStore Carousel Ports will be used for picking, while three Conveyor Ports will be combined to become one workstation with direct access to three bins with different storage locations each. This innovative solution, designed by the Kardex team, will help maximize the efficiency of pallet decanting in the inbound process. To ensure the highest possible availability of the robots during operation, Kardex will also provide a robot cleaning station. The modular design of AutoStore allows for expansions in terms of throughput and storage capacity at any time without disrupting ongoing operations. Bleckmann's AutoStore solution has been designed with a very flexible setup and can be easily extended to 100,000 storage bins, depending on their customer’s needs. Port frames are built into the system in preparation for future expansion with additional workstations.
